iPhone 13 vs iPhone 12: Any Differences?

Apple has launched its new iPhones variants i.e. iPhone 13 and iPhone mini alongside its iPhone 13 Pro series at its California live-streaming launch event, and seeing there’s not much hype around it. This is because the new iPhone 13 models haven’t a high refresh rate display or extra cameras. But for those people who want to upgrade from their older iPhone to a new affordable latest option, today here we will compare the new iPhone 13 and 13 mini with the iPhone 12 and 12 mini.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 12: In-Depth Comparison (2021)

Design and Display

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini brings shows the key difference over their predecessors, showing the presence of smaller notches. Apple says during the launch event that they have shrunk the notch by 20 percent in comparison to the iPhone 12, the design is mostly unchanged. If you take a closer look at the back panel, you can notice that the rear camera’s arrangement is a little different now. In iPhone 13 the cameras are placed diagonally instead of vertically stacking them, as seen in iPhone 12.

Unfortunately, the ProMotion display with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz is limited to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models. The iPhone 13 has the same 60Hx 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display and iPhone 13 mini has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display. However, the display is brighter now, with a peak of 800 nits. In iPhone 12/12 mini got only 625 nits of peak brightness.

Device Performance

iPhone 13 and 13 mini are also powered by the new A15 Bionic chipset, the same as given in the Pro models. It is the successor of the A14 Bionic chip which is found on board in the iPhone 12 series and built on the 5nm architecture. The new A15 Bionic uses a Hexa-core CPU with 2 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, 4-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine.

On the other hand, the A14 Bionic chip has a Hexa-core CPU with 2 performance cores, and 4 efficiency cores, a quad-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. There are 15-billions transistors used in the A15 Bionic chip, unlike the 11.8 billion on A14 Bionic.

Camera

In the new iPhone 13 and 13 mini Apple has used the same dual 12MO camera setup with f/1.6 wide lens and f/2.4 ultra-wide lens. According to Cupertino giant, the wide camera can capture 47 percent more light. However, the major difference is that the cameras in the iPhone 13 series feature sensor-shift optical image stabilization.

It is said that the new iPhone 13 series introduces some new camera features such as Cinematic mode for recording videos, and Photographic Styles with shallow depth field (1080p @ 30 FPS). The new camera have also new Smart HDR4, which can now recognize four different people in the frame and optimizes the contrast, lightings, and skin tones itself.

Battery

Coming to the battery department, Apple says you will get up to 19 hours of video playback, 15 hours of streaming, and 75 hours of audio playback on the new iPhone 13. The older iPhone 12 series promised up to 16 hours of video playback, 11 hours of streaming, and 65 hours of audio playback.

Coming to the iPhone 13 mini apple says that this small device would offer up to 17 hours of video playback, 13 hours of streaming, and 55 hours of audio playback. Which is an upgrade from the iPhone 12 mini.

Apple says the new iPhone 13 mini will offer additional 1.5 hours of extra battery life than the older 12 mini in a single charge. For the regular iPhone 13, it promises to give up to 2.5 hours of additional usage before you look for the lightning cable.

Should You Upgrade to the new iPhone 13?

The new iPhone 13 comes with fewer cuts than the iPhone 13 Pro lineup. If your old iPhone devices are still in good condition and working fine then there’s no point in upgrading to the iPhone 13 series.
